Michigan manufacturers have a new set of tools to help them improve production and quality, tackle labor shortages, and stay competitive in the global marketplace: Industry 4.0 technology—and the Michigan Manufacturing Technology Center (MMTC) is helping them make the most of it. On Tuesday, the Michigan Manufacturing Technology Center hosted an Industry 4.0 Technology Showcase in Hudson in partnership with the Southern Michigan Center for Science and Industry, Lenawee Now, Michigan Works, and Automation Alley. This event was just one of a series of showcases providing manufacturing professionals and students with hands-on experience with the advanced technologies revolutionizing their industries. Attendees also had a chance to discuss trends and best practices with MMTC staff, who have deep experience working in a variety of manufacturing sectors.

“Our Michigan manufacturers are facing many challenges, from supply chain issues to a lack of personnel, and the Industry 4.0 technologies can provide them the agility to react to issues or capitalize on opportunities in real-time,” noted MMTC Manager of Operational Excellence, Chuck Werner. “For example, automation can be used to fill the dull, dirty, or dangerous jobs that manufacturers struggle to find the associates to fill. And the use of data, and analytics can tie shop floor performance directly to the financial results of the business, allowing leaders at all levels of the business to see where they should be investing and spending their time,” he noted.

Additive manufacturing was just one of the technologies demonstrated at the event; other popular Industry 4.0 tools include the Internet of Things (IoT), which creates a network of interconnected objects using “smart” sensors and software, and collaborative robots, or “cobots,” which work alongside human workers to automate specific tasks or functions in a process. In addition to hosting events, MMTC provides direct support to manufacturers looking to get in on the Industry 4.0 action with free, on-site technology assessments tailored to the company’s needs.

“There are so many new tools available to manufacturers that it can be confusing to decide where to invest,” said Steve Tebbetts, MMTC Business Solutions Manager.. “We demystify the

process by evaluating a company’s current operations, using our expertise to recommend solutions, and helping them integrate the new technology with their existing systems and staff.”

Industry 4.0 technology is a must-have for manufacturers wanting to stay ahead of the curve, and MMTC’s technology showcases are providing an essential introduction to the tools and software that will move our industry into the future.
