“Creating Economic Opportunity in Michigan” was the theme of Site Selection Magazine’s September Spotlight which featured a discussion on the future of economic development in our state. Patti Pope, President and CEO of Consumers Energy was interviewed for this piece.

When asked to list the advantages of Michigan’s economic climate, Pope explained, “Michigan offers many business advantages: temperate climate, a stable, predictable tax and regulatory environment, proximity to major Midwest cities and Canada, natural resources, a skilled workforce, and plentiful engineering, research, and development talent that that supports a strong manufacturing presence.” We couldn’t agree more. Michigan’s business climate is one of the best in the nation. The Michigan Economic Development Corporation has proven their commitment to, as Pope states, “market Michigan’s total value proposition as the best place to do business,”

While we, also, work hard in Lenawee County to attract and retain businesses to strengthen our local economy, this article gave us a reconnection with the bigger picture. Michigan’s thriving business climate is truly a group effort among all regions and counties.

A successful economy cannot stand without a strong foundation. At Lenawee Now, we are shaping this foundation around the future of economic development in our communities. This includes crumbling the notion that students must earn a college degree as opposed to preparing for a successful career in skilled trades.

Lenawee County’s new pitch contest, Square One, is giving entrepreneurs the opportunity to turn an original idea into a potential billion-dollar business. Lenawee Now’s Business Acceleration Team is committed to working with clients to provide guidance and support for new business endeavors. New businesses in our area create jobs, strengthen communities, and further support Michigan’s economy.

Our relationship with partners including Michigan Works! Southeast, Michigan Economic Development Corporation, The Detroit Regional Chamber, Ann Arbor SPARK, The Greater Ann Arbor Region, Adrian/Tecumseh SmartZones, and the Regional Growth Partnership out of Ohio ensure we remain involved and informed in all things economic development.

The future of economic development in Michigan starts with our community. Lenawee County has a lot to offer business, including a skilled workforce, rich manufacturing climate, and entrepreneurial support.
