ADRIAN, MI, Align Center for Workforce Development is pleased to be hosting the Healthcare Careers Day Camp in partnership with Promedica, Siena Heights University, and Lenawee Medical Care Facility. The event is free to Lenawee County 7th through 12th-grade students and will take place at Siena Heights University on Wednesday, June 14, from 9 AM to 4 PM.

By attending, participants can learn about non-traditional career options in the healthcare field by hearing from medical professionals and participating in hands-on activities. After completing the course, students will receive an Introduction to Medical Careers Certification. Lunch is provided to attendees.

Students will gain insights into five different medical vocations: Infectious Disease Control, Biomedical Technician, Phlebotomy, Pharmacy Technician, and Medical Assistant. Learners will discover the roles and responsibilities of these professionals by playing medical detectives to solve a healthcare mystery.

To begin, attendees will be introduced to the field of infectious disease control. The mystery comes about after an “outbreak,” orchestrated by an individual in one of the five medical professions. Participants will examine suspects in each healthcare discipline. Throughout the day, participants will discover various facets of the healthcare industry through activities, modeling different tasks of each occupation.

Through this event, the Align Center for Workforce Development’s objective is to show the options in the medical field and prepare the next generation for the available jobs. According to Sheila Blair, Manager of the Align Center for Workforce Development: “The path to successful employment in the healthcare industry doesn’t have to be a four-year degree, although those are also needed. Just to get your foot in the door, a 12-week certification may be just what you need to start your healthcare career.” From there, she said, students can discover their next path while working in a healthcare facility and observing other professionals at work.

“Many times, organizations will provide tuition reimbursement for an existing employee to upskill and move to another in-demand position,” Blair added.

Medical workers are in high demand, meaning healthcare providers are apt to accept a certification in place of a traditional degree. With an Introduction to Medical Careers Certification, students can expedite their time from the classroom to a vocation.

Align hopes to continue this partnership, adding additional career exposures in healthcare and other careers.
