BROOKLYN, Mich., Aug. 16, 2015 – Consumers Energy honored Michigan International Speedway for its commitment to renewable energy, naming Michigan’s largest racetrack as its Green Generation Customer of the Year.

Officials from the racetrack and Consumers Energy, Michigan’s largest energy provider, made the announcement before the start of the Pure Michigan 400. A year ago, Michigan International Speedway became the largest participant to match 100 percent of its energy use with renewable sources through Consumers Energy’s Green Generation program.

“We are pleased to recognize Michigan International Speedway for not just talking the talk when it comes to making Michigan a better place to live, but walking the walk,” said Garrick Rochow, Consumers Energy’s vice president and chief customer officer. “Our friends at MIS are reducing their energy use, supporting renewable energy, and planting the seeds – literally – for Michigan’s future.”

“We’re totally committed to Michigan and appreciate Consumers Energy’s recognition of our involvement in Green Generation and the actions we have taken in the last year to become more sustainable,” said Roger Curtis, Michigan International Speedway president. “We hope we can be a leader in NASCAR and in Michigan, making our state a better place.”

Nearly 20,000 homes and businesses in Michigan participate in Green Generation, supporting renewable energy right here in Michigan.

Additional steps taken by Consumers Energy and MIS to help build Michigan’s clean energy future include:

  • Working together to provide 50,000 trees to the Michigan Association of Conservation Districts to be planted across Michigan.
  • Reducing energy use at the racetrack significantly by installing energy efficient lighting and heating and cooling system upgrades identified during comprehensive on-site energy audits.
  • Consumers Energy recently announcing its new Solar Gardens program will be open for enrollment later this fall.
